The World University of Design (WUD) is now accepting applications until July 31, 2024, for its School of Performing Arts. The programs offered include Bachelor’s in Performing Arts (BPA), Master’s in Performing Arts (MPA), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Dance and Music. Merit-based scholarships are available, covering a portion of the academic fees, with selection criteria based on performance in the WUD entrance exam and relevant academic qualifications. The School of Performing Arts also has a collaboration with the University of Winchester to expand opportunities for comprehensive education in performing arts across various creative domains.
The university eagerly welcomes students from Punjab, presenting them with valuable opportunities to explore their passion for performing arts and forge sustainable careers. Punjab, renowned for its vibrant culture, hosts a dynamic dance and music scene that embodies its lively spirit. Bhangra, synonymous with the region, features energetic movements and rhythmic beats, traditionally performed during harvest festivals. Giddha, a graceful folk dance performed by women, showcases creativity and storytelling through dance. Punjab’s musical heritage includes Punjabi folk music, distinguished by dhol beats, tumbi sounds, and evocative lyrics exploring themes of love and valor. The state has also made significant contributions to global music, producing artists who have showcased Punjabi music on international stages.
These cultural expressions thrive in festivals, weddings, and social gatherings, deeply embedded in Punjab’s identity and community life. Despite abundant artistic talent in every village, children often lack pathways to turn their passion for music and dance into professional careers. The World University of Design (WUD) aims to bridge this gap through its Master of Performing Arts (MPA) and Bachelor of Performing Arts (BPA) programs. At WUD, Punjab’s cultural legacy is honored with a platform for students to refine their skills and pursue careers in the arts.
These programs blend traditional practices with contemporary techniques, offering a comprehensive education aligned with global standards. Students learn from expert faculty—renowned performers and educators with extensive industry experience. They benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, including studios and performance spaces equipped with advanced technology to support learning and practice.
Eligibility criteria vary for all courses. BPA Dance/Music applicants require completion of secondary education (12th grade or equivalent). MPA Music/Dance candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree and possess at least five years of formal music/dance training. PhD applicants need a master’s degree with a minimum of 55% marks, with relaxations as per UGC norms.
Rooted in ancient Indian philosophy, WUD’s School of Performing Arts emphasizes interdisciplinary education in dance and music theory and practice. The curriculum prepares students for careers in entertainment, corporate, and developmental sectors by fostering critical thinking, cultural management, and practical expertise in performance, choreography, and production.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Vice-Chancellor of World University of Design, discussing prospective students, noted, “At the School of Performing Arts (SoPA) at World University of Design, we eagerly welcome applicants from Punjab, a state renowned for its rich cultural heritage. Many aspiring talents from this region face limited opportunities to pursue their passion for music and dance professionally. Our BPA and MPA programs integrate Punjabi cultural elements, enabling students to explore new artistic pathways while honoring their heritage. WUD students benefit from a robust network of industry professionals, internships, and placements, offering opportunities on both national and international stages. Our educational approach focuses on fostering creativity, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration, preparing graduates for diverse roles within the arts sector.”
The deadline for application submission is July 31, 2024. For further details and to apply, visit the World University of Design Application Portal.
