Birth defects are structural / functional defects that may or may not appear at birth but can have a variable effect on personal life. Some birth defects are the major cause of physical and mental disability. Birth defects are major or minor. And can affect any part of our body such as heart, brain, spine, eyes, ears etc.
According to the World Health Organization, every year around 8 million children worldwide are born with severe birth defects and India is the second largest populous country in the world, so we are well aware of the large number of children born every year in India. Can imagine from Some of these births can be prevented with early intervention and management can be provided for some. The Genetic Center, GMCH-32 has been set up under the proposal of ‘Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation’ through UT Administration under the supervision and guidance of the late Dr. BS Chavan. Here during pregnancy and soon after birth Prenatal and neonatal screening is done to identify some birth defects.
