First, pick the right shampoo for your hair extension.

Here is how you will know which shampoo to use to wash your hair extension

Whichever the hair extension, the number one rule is to avoid any shampoo with silicon content in it. Hair extension will get damaged if gets into contact with silicone. Similarly, deviate from using shampoos with extensive oil portions, as too much oil will damage your hair extension. Look for organic shampoo in health food stores and remember to shop for products not meant for dry hair as they will over-moisturize the extensions causing slippage.

Your scalp produces oils and it is thus good to use shampoo and conditioner with less oily content to maintain the health of your extensions. However, do not get brainwashed with the belief that the oil will limit you from properly washing your extension. It is your hair extension you want to wash so the soapy-ness only needs to drip through you extension brands, not from the roots of your natural hair.

For extensions of Brazilian hair weave care & treatment, you will prefer washing with a shampoo that gives a shiny look and retains the texture of the hair. NYK1 duo shampoo will do the trick here.

Clip-Ins extensions require sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Shampoo recommended for washing clip-in extensions should be 100% free of sulfate and sodium chloride. Look for a shampoo that will leave your hair moisturized and fizzy. Choose the shampoo and conditioner wisely as per your budget. But do not buy cheap waxy shampoo that may cause greasy build-up on your scalp which will eventually damage your natural hair.

For tape-in extensions or bonded locks. Dry shampoos are a nice match for washing tape-in extensions and require that you spray directly to your extension. In the case of curly extension, look for natural organic shampoo and conditioner so that your hair will smooth and shiny. It will be easy to comb when washed with organic natural shampoo. Tape-in extensions are permanent and may get dry or damaged along the way. Use a shampoo that is 100% free of Sulfate. Doing this will extend your extension lifespan.

Keratin bonded extensions will require mild shampoo that does not leave your hair dropping and shedding. It also needs a shampoo that is 100% sulphate free. If your shampoo has oily content, just ensure it is natural oil to prevent the bonds from weakening. Still, you have to use alcohol-free shampoo. When washing bonded hair with shampoo wash in a ‘zigzag’ motion so as to ease the pressure on the bonds.

Once you have found the right shampoo for your hair extension, it is time to wash your extension.

Wet your hair all over before applying shampoo.  Add drops of shampoo and massage from your roots. Do not apply too much pressure to prevent tangles and breakage of bonds. Condition your extension by applying a moisturizer; deep condition properly before rinsing with warm water.

The next step would be to dry up your hair. You can opt to sit under a dryer or blow your extension with a blower. Make sure your hair and the bonded or clamped extension dry completely. You should repeat washing your hair extension regularly for a frequency of two weeks.

Using the right shampoo will relieve you future damage and breakage with your hair extension and casual shedding on your natural hair. Consult with your hair extension stylist for the best shampoo for your hair extension before you proceed to purchase the intended hair extension ☺
