Hike in fuel price raises veggie rates, but onions get cheaper
With the recent hike in fuel prices, some vegetables that aren’t grown in the nearby villages of Punjab have gone costlier at the local apni mandis of the city.
However, onions aren’t one of them as their rate has dropped from Rs 50/kg to Rs 35/kg, with mandi officials expecting a further reduction.
Auction recorder for Punjab Mandi Board Harpreet Singh said,”Onions grow in Rajasthan’s Alwar, besides Maharashtra’s Nashik, have started coming to the market now.
Earlier just one to two trucks of onion would come to the wholesale mandi daily but the number has gone upto six, thus lowering the rates.”
As per him the wholesale rate of onions is between Rs 24/kg and rs 30/kg.
“However, the prices are on the higher side owning to the fuel hike.During the corresponding period in the last few years, the rate was between Rs 15/kg and Rs 20/kg”, he added.
As per the sources, many traders who had been stockpiling onions are also emptying their storage with prices likely to dip further, due to which there is an abundance of onions in the market.
Due to increase in supply the price of tomatoes has also gone down by Rs 5/kg between February and March.
Meanwhile, prices of some other vegetables such as capsicum, broccoli, ladyfinger and carrot, which are not grown locally, have increased by Rs 5/kg to Rs 10/kg, primarily owing to the fuel hike.
As per officials these prices will stay up as long as the rate of fuel remains on the higher side.
After logging a daily hike the price of fuel has been stable for about a week now. Petrol rate in Chandigarh remained Rs 87.73/litre, while diesel is at 81.17/litre.
