“As Coronavirus infection reached late in India, we can learn from the mistakes of other affected countries besides learning from China on how effectively they contained the virus spread.”
Dr Deepak Puri director cardiovascular thoracic surgery at Max Hospital, Mohali stated this during a webinar on ‘Covid-19: current situation and future guidelines’ with around 100 faculty members of Chandigarh Group of Colleges ,Landran today.
He said that as India has very high population density and inadequate healthcare facilities to match community spread of Covid 19 ,thus it is very important to control the spread in the initial stage to prevent disaster.
“We Indians must realize the gravity of the situation and understand that best way to survive this calamity is to be prepared for a long war against the deadly virus and accept some amount of inconvenience.”

However if we strictly adopt all preventive measures, we can restrict the infection to within 12,000 people and deaths to within 300. If we adopt in-between pathway, we can have around 50,000 infected people and 1,000 deaths, pointed out Dr Puri who is also the global chairman of Cardiomersion.
He said further that we should not panic and not pressurize the authorities to relax lockdown prematurely and should wait till the regression of disease starts and falls below the previous figure each day .
“After that we should be prepared for gradual relaxation over a period of several months to prevent recurrence. This is what is termed as the ‘Hammer and Dance’ policy to contain the virus spread effectively.”
It means that we adopt stringent lockdown till the infection rate starts regressing, thereby giving us time to strengthen our healthcare and frustrate our enemy and after that we allow graded relaxation and measures that would help in preventing community spread of the virus thus making sure there is strict surveillance all the time, he maintained.
It is very important for each citizen to realize his role to support the authorities and healthcare professionals in their efforts and any wrong move can make or ruin our future as an individual, family and nation, he said.

We must learn from the mistakes that Americans and Europeans committed in initial failure to enforce serious lockdown measure, he said adding that delay made the situation go out of control causing complete break-down of their healthcare because of the enormous population of infected patients requiring intensive care.
