The team of cardiologists at Fortis Hospital Mohali led by Dr R.K Jaswal, Director and Head of Department, Cardiology and Director, Cathlabs, along with Dr Sean Gallagher, Director of Interventional Cardiology, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff-UK, organised a joint workshop for the treatment of highly challenging and complex calcified coronary artery blockages.

Dr Sean Gallagher is a renowned and an internationally recognised authority in the treatment of severe calcified plague in coronary vessels through Intravascular Lithotripsy.

Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) is a novel approach to lesion preparation of severely calcified plaques in coronary and peripheral vessels. The doctor delivers the catheter to the heart by making a small cut (incision) in the patient’s arm or leg. The lithotripsy emitters at the end of the catheter create pressure waves that are intended to break up the calcification that is restricting the blood flow in the vessels of the heart

The case of a patient who was referred to Fortis Hospital Mohali from Bathinda in a critical condition with heart and artery failure was taken up in the workshop.

Dr Jaswal informed that he treated the calcified vessel disease as a life-saving procedure on 5th September.

“After that his heart and artery condition stabilised. On 12th October, the patient was taken up for the management of the remaining coronary lesion through the special technique of Intravascular Lithotripsy, which was discussed in a joint workshop today”, he added.

Fortis Hospital Mohali has established itself as the Centre of Excellence for the treatment of calcified coronary artery disease by Rotational Atherectomy in this region. Fortis Hospital Mohali has the highest experience in the technique of Intravascular Lithotripsy in the region.
