Fortis Hospital Mohali commemorated World Patient Safety Day (WPSD) on the 17th of September through several activities which were aligned with the theme, ‘safe maternal and newborn care’. The hospital created conversation around the same with the objective of increasing public awareness and engagement, enhancing an understanding of the gaps and challenges faced in providing the same and improving patient safety and care. Following the global signature of the campaign, i.e., to light up iconic monuments, landmarks, and public places in the color orange, the hospital lit up its tower for the day.

 

Before the activities planned for the day were initiated, Dr Shweta Prabhakar, Head Quality & Patient Safety, Fortis Hospital Mohali gave a welcome address wherein she explained the importance of patient safety. She also emphasized on how patient safety and care is the very essence of ‘patient centricity’, the cornerstone on which the hospital plans all its treatment procedures and approaches.

Dr Swapna Misra, Director, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Fortis Hospital Mohali, advocated for the adoption of best practices at the point of care, to prevent avoidable risks and harm to all women and newborn babies (during childbirth). She stressed on the need to ensure safe maternal and newborn care, by promoting safe institutional deliveries. A short video featuring Dr Misra on the Best Practices followed by Team Paalna, Fortis Hospital Mohali’s birthing facility, was also shown on the occasion.

Dr Sunil Agarwal, Senior Consultant, Paediatrics & Neonatology, Fortis Hospital Mohali, discussed how to engage multiple stakeholders and adopt effective and innovative strategies to improve maternal and newborn safety. A video on the Best Practices by Team Neonatology Intensive Care Unit (NICU), was also showcased during the event. A skit based on WPSD theme was performed by Team Paalna & NICU to promote awareness.

Air Marshal (Dr) R.K. Ranyal, Medical Director, Fortis Hospital Mohali, also spoke on the objective of World Patient Safety Day and stressed upon the need for urgent and sustainable actions by all stakeholders to scale up efforts, reach the unreached and ensure safe maternal and newborn care, particularly during childbirth. The day-long event concluded by felicitation & closing address by Air Marshal (Dr) Ranyal.
