Fortis Hospital, Mohali organised a seminar on the theme “Global Health” at DAV Senior Secondary Public School, Sector 8 today. Dr. Sonia Gandhi, Head, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Fortis Hospital, Mohali was the key-speaker at the seminar. She delineated on the changing face of health climate in the country and urged the students to pave the way to a healthy living, by adopting a nutritious diet & a persistent workout regimen.
Emphasizing on the immense significance of a healthy lifestyle, Dr. Sonia said, “There has been an increasing dependence of children on electronic gadgets. Only one in three children is physically active in a day. According to a recent survey, children now spend more than seven and a half hours a day in front of a screen (e.g., TV, video games, computer); which ultimately affects their mental and physical well-being.”
While physical activity is of utmost importance for good health, the nutrition also impacts the health of individual equally. Stressing on the same, Dr. Sonia added, “The World Health Organization has stated that at least 80 percent of all heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes, and up to 40 percent of cancer could be prevented if people ate better, engaged in more physical activity and quit using tobacco.”
“We all must ensure that we eat well and engage in physical activity. These habits are beneficial for all, and even the simplest of changes can make a big impact on our well-being,” she concluded. The seminar was followed by an interactive session on the subject ‘Childhood Nutrition and Health’, which called attention to the dire need to inculcate good eating habits among children.
Over 120 students from 7th, 8th and 9th standard were educated about the present health-related challenges, unhealthy food choices and how with discretion, smart & intelligent selection of food we can improve our overall quality of life, prevent ailments and enhance overall physical and mental health.
The seminar proved to be a great success in spreading awareness about global health amongst the youth of the country.
