Fortis Cancer Institute Mohali Showcases Advanced Surface Guided Radiation Therapy

The Department of Onco-Surgery at Fortis Cancer Institute, Mohali, hosted a one-day seminar titled ‘SGRT – Cancer & Beyond’ at a local hotel today. The event showcased the highly advanced Elekta Versa HD equipped with Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT), a technology that enhances precision in cancer treatment. This system is available exclusively at Fortis Hospital Mohali, the only private hospital in the North Region to offer such advanced care.

The Elekta Versa HD with SGRT provides a superior option for precision radiation therapy and surface-guided radiation therapy. It serves as a non-invasive alternative for the treatment of small tumours, including brain metastases, arteriovenous malformations (AVM), trigeminal neuralgia, acoustic neuroma, pituitary adenomas, and movement disorders. This capability allows for unparalleled precision in targeting tumours, significantly improving patient outcomes.

Doctors from the Department of Onco-Surgery at Fortis Cancer Institute, including Dr. Narendra Bhalla, Director,  Radiation Oncology; Dr. Manishi Bansal, Senior Consultant; and Dr. Abhishek Puri, Consultant, were the primary organizers of the event. The seminar covered key topics such as an introduction to SGRT, motion management with SGRT in lung and breast cancers, and included a panel discussion.

Discussing the benefits of the Elekta Versa HD SGRT Treatment, Dr Bhalla, further, added, “Elekta Versa HD precisely targeted cancer cells, while minimizing the impact on healthy tissues with personalised treatment plans. It also offers stereotactic radiation therapy as a non-invasive alternative for small tumours. The surface guidance also aids Deep Inspiratory Breath Hold (DIBH) Technique for Breast Cancer by temporarily moving critical organs away from the breast during radiation, minimizing exposure and improving treatment efficacy.”

Dr. Bhalla elaborated on the benefits of the Elekta Versa HD SGRT treatment, adding, “The Elekta Versa HD targets cancer cells with precision while minimizing the impact on healthy tissues through personalized treatment plans. He further added, “We can treat breast cancer through 5-10 sessions of radiation through accelerated or SGRT therapy depending upon the stage of cancer. On the other hand, prostate cancer can be treated through five radiation therapy sessions (localized) through Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) Technique. On treating brain metastasis, Dr Bhalla, said, “Brain metastasis of 5-15 ml can be treated through SRS Cone Radiation Therapy with high accuracy.”
