Debunking some common misconceptions about diabetes:Diabetes is an increase in blood sugar level that causes health problems. It is genetic and cannot be cured but is indeed manageable. The recent lifestyle changes and influence of the western world has increased our dependency on packed and processed food, restaurant food delivery, and making life sedentary requiring a significant reduction in our carb consumption.

 

It is important to take care of our body and avoid food that are unhealthy.  Dr. Charandeep Singh Sidhu, Consultant Endocrinologist Manipal Hospital Patiala has busted a few myths about diabetes below:

 

  • Jaggery is a safe substitute for sugar in diabetes: Sugar craving is natural but replacing white sugar with jaggery or brown sugar is not the right choice for diabetic patients. Jaggery is a healthy option only for non-diabetic patients. People with diabetes can find other artificial sweeteners that are safe and easily available in the market.
  • Sugar causes Diabetes: There is no direct connection between sugar and diabetes. However, limited consumption of sugar and maintaining an ideal blood sugar level are necessary. Excessive intake of sugar gives rise to other complications like obesity, which can further lead to diabetes.
  • Exercises are risky in diabetes: Physical risks do not have any potential risk in patients of diabetes. However, it is advisable to ask your doctor before starting an extensive workout or physical activity that can be stressful for the body.
  • Insulin is compulsory for diabetics: Insulin is the hormone produced inside the body and is responsible for supplying glucose and energy from food to the body. Taking insulin shots might or might not be required and depends on the type of diabetes and condition of the body.
  • Overweight means diabetic: Obesity is one of the risk factors associated with diabetes. It can happen to anyone and has no direct relationship with weight.
  • Diabetes leads to blindness: Excess of everything is harmful, so is diabetes. It is vital to maintain ideal blood sugar levels and the following strict methods. Diabetes leads to blindness only happen in rare cases due to the negligence of the patient.
  • You cannot eat sweet: Diabetic patients need to be careful about the intake of carbohydrates, and sugar is all carbohydrate. There are various options available to help you replace sugar. One can also eat sugar if the diet is managed carefully, depending on the condition of the patient.

Diabetes can be reversed with appropriate changes in diet and routine activity. You will remain a diabetic patient even after doing regular follow-ups but without requiring any medical treatment. It is high time even for non-diabetics eat right and follow doctors’ advice.
