There was a spurt increase in the incidents of two wheeler theft & snatching in the City which prompted the Chandigarh Police to have a brain-storming session. As per the briefings given by the senior officers, a special campaign was organized to target the auto lifters & snatchers.
In this context, Crime Branch has developed an input that an interstate gang belongs to Uttar Pradesh is active in the area of tricity, especially in UT/Chandigarh for committing the incidents of vehicle thefts and snatchings from the last 8/9 months. Upon this, different teams of Anti Auto Theft Cell of Crime Branch under the close supervision of Sh. Pawan Kumar, DSP/Crime were deputed.
On 07.03.2017, on a tip of, a team of Anti Auto Cell headed by Inspector Gurmukh Singh consisting SI Ashok Kumar, HC Kanwar Pal and other officials laid a naka under over bridge of Sector 11/15 dividing road and during checking, the team apprehended two persons namely Ashok Kumar @ Bellu @ Punjabi s/o Jaipal r/o Village-Biralian, PS-Jhinjhana, District-Shamli, UP and Rajesh Kumar s/o Janardhan r/o Village-Khanpur Kalan, PS-Jhinjhana, District-Shamli, UP alongwith a Motor Cycle bearing registration No. HR-05-AD-3271, make- Splender while they were coming from Sector-15, Chandigarh. On further checking, the registration number of the said Motor Cycle found fake and on further verification the same is found stolen from Karnal in case FIR No. 654 dated 15.08.2016 u/s 379 IPC, PS-Civil Lines, Karnal, Haryana. The actual registration number of this motorcycle is HR-05-AC-0136. In this regard, a case FIR No. 45 dated 07.03.2017 u/s 471, 473. 474 & 411 IPC was registered in Police Station-Sector-11, Chandigarh.
During the interrogation, both the accused have disclosed that they have had snatched number of gold chains and also stolen two-wheelers in Chandigarh as well as Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and other parts of India.
On 08.03.2017, upon their disclosure statement, both were produced before the Hon’ble Court and obtained 03 days police remand for further investigation. One of their co-accused namely Dev Kohli @ Hunny s/o Jai Narayan Kohli r/o Village-Alaudeenpur, PS-JhinJhana, District-Shamli (UP) was also arrested on 10.03.2017. After the recovery of some gold chains and stolen vehicles on their instance, they were again produced before the Hon’ble Court on 12.03.2017 and obtained further police remand upto 15.03.2017.
During further investigation, total 21 gold chains and 02 stolen two-wheelers have been recovered at their instance which led to solving of 24 cases (21 gold chain + 03 two-wheelers) registered with different police stations of the city.
