City rickshaw pullers get thirst-quenching ‘Rahat’ from Rotarians
Rotary Club of Chandigarh provided water bottles and towels to 500 city rickshaw pullers.
Rtn AP Singh whose one-year term as President of the Rotary Club of Chandigarh begins today, said that Rotary has grand plans to work with the community to take up some of the major projects in the city this year.
He informed that a senior Rotarian and past district governor Rtn Kawal Bedi conceived the project ‘Rahat’ for which she raised more than Rs.1 lakh to provide 500 water bottles and a towel for the hardworking rickshaw pullers who toil the whole day in the summer heat to help the city residents commute comfortably.
This is the least that any citizen can do and we appeal the people to join in this campaign and provide this service to the rickshaw pullers, he said.
City SSP Traffic Shashank Anand joined the Rotarians to kick off this campaign at Hotel Aroma.
He distributed free water bottles to some of the rickshaw pullers in the Hotel Aroma complex and later flagged off the teams of Rotarians who spread out in the city to gift water bottles to the needy.
SSP Shashank commended the Rotarians for their concern and care for these forgotten daily wagers.
The Club which has completed 60 years of humanitarian service in the city, since 1958, has taken some of the major projects like building Rotary PGI Serai, blood bank in Sector 37, vocational training centre in sector 18, international dolls museum in Sector 23, besides providing free heart surgeries to the poor children, to name just a few.
The new team under the leadership of Rtn AP Singh shall be formally installed on 14th of July at CII where the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT Chandigarh, Shri VP Singh Badnore shall be the chief guest.
