Awareness walk held to mark ‘World No Tobacco Day’

An awareness walk to mark ‘World No Tobacco Day’ was observed by Ivy Hospital Panchkula this morning from hospital to Dolphin Chowk. Carrying various placards the participants spread awareness on bad effects of tobacco during walk.

The purpose of the walk was to create awareness among public regarding the bad health effects of cigarette, bidi, sulfa and cigar smoking. Tobacco has nicotine which is a strong addictive substance. Besides causing almost all kinds of cancers, tobacco also causes lung related problems like bronchitis and damage to oxygen conducting units in the lung, said Dr SK Gupta Pulmonologist, Ivy hospital.

In addition to this heart & blood vessels also bear the brunt of tobacco use. The tobacco use is responsible for heart attack, narrowing of lung capillaries, said Dr Gupta adding 12% of world’s smokers reside in India & every year 10-lakh people die due to tobacco.

Dr. Mukesh, GMO- Ivy Hospital Panchkula said that lung function testing are being done free of cost for smokers at Ivy.  Besides this we have also a facility for cessation of the use of tobacco and its products, he informed.
