AI is a game-changer in agriculture: Experts

On the third day of Agro Tech 2022, an informative & engrossing session on the importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was held at the event. Panelists and experts from the area shared their views about the use of technology and its implementation to cater to the growing need of food demand.

Stressing on the need of technology in farming, Mr. Weird Vonk, Worldwide Innovator, Horticulture, and GM, Asia Hoogendoom, Netherlands, said, “With the ever increasing population, by 2050, the requirement for food is going to increase 70 per cent which would require three times the planet to fulfill the demand. It is important that we understand the importance of using technology in agriculture to increase productivity & cultivation to deal with it.”

There are marginal farmers who have been using the traditional ways of farming for a long time. While speaking on the need to introduce them to AI, Mr. Vinod Sood, Co-Chairman, CII Regional Committee (NR) on DT & AI and Co-Founder & MD Hughes Systique, said, “It is a challenge to get the latest technology to the marginal farmer to tackle some of the major challenges faced in farming.

Technology should be used to make technology affordable for farmers to adopt it for farming and make more yield and better profits.”

Adding to it, Dr. Vishal Bector, Professor (Farm Machinery & Power Engineering) & Associate Director (Industrial Linkages), PAU, said, “One must not look for technology in isolation because collaboration is the key to boost productivity. By setting standards, building protocols, developing quality, seeable algorithms & prescriptions for sustainable agriculture through networking of knowledge island and AI.
