Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society organises breast cancer walkathon
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024, Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society organised a Breast Cancer Walkathon to mark ‘Pink October.’ Over 200 people from different walks of life took part in the walkathon. The participants were holding placards with slogans written on them which  raised awareness about breast cancer and precautions to prevent the disease.

The walkathon was flagged-off by Chief Guest Dr. (Prof) Sushmita Ghoshal, Professor and Head, Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology, PGIMER, from outside Showroom No. 1, Sector 17, Chandigarh. The walk concluded at Sector 17’s fountain plaza. At the plaza an introduction of the theme and significance of ‘Pink October’ was shared in a welcome address by Renu Saigal, President, Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society.

Renu Saigal, also a cancer survivor, said, “The theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as set by the World Health Organization (WHO), is ‘No-one should face breast cancer alone’.”

The walkathon saw participation from NCC and NSS students, members of Carmel Ex-Students Association(CESA), representatives from Testing Xperts,  Rotary Club Chandigarh Midtown, Inner Wheel Club and Rotaract Club among others. Notably, breast cancer survivors also joined the walk, showcasing their resilience and spreading hope for those currently battling the disease.

Sharing health tips to prevent breast cancer, Dr Ghoshal said: “Women should maintain a healthy weight, and eat a balanced and nutritious diet. They should stay physically active, and avoid alcohol and smoking. Women must breast-feed as long as possible.”

The event, which also underscored the need to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer, saw participants and speakers encouraging the community to practice regular breast self-examinations and not to hesitate in seeking medical advice if they notice any irregularities or suspect a lump.

Ajay Tulli, Administrator, Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society, stated, “The walkathon is a powerful reminder that the fight against breast cancer requires collective effort. We hope that today’s event inspires people to be proactive about their health.”

“Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society remains committed to supporting cancer patients and advocating for early detection and prevention strategies as part of its mission to promote health and well-being in the community,” added Tulli.

A skit on breast cancer awareness was performed by students from the Home Science College.  A Zumba session too was also held by Maandvi Sharma, a certified Zumba instructor.
