India get 14-lakh new cases of breast cancer every year
As many as 40 doctors from Pinjore, Kalka and Parwanoo took part in a continue medical education (CME) on breast cancer at a hotel here last night.
Speaking during occasion, Brig (Dr.) Rajeshwar Singh, director-oncology at Ivy Hospital, Mohali said that cancer is increasing rapidly in India with 14-lakh new cases getting detected every year .
Talking about risk factors, Dr. Singh said that breast cancer is a disease of women but rarely men can also get the disease. Breast cancer incidence rises with age until the age of 75 to 80.
Prolonged use of post-menopausal hormone treatment especially those with age above 50, have increased risk of breast cancer. Women with a younger age at menarche (when menses begins) and a later age at onset of menopause (when menses end), have increased breast cancer risk.
Women who give birth multiple times and breastfeed their children longer would have less chances of breast cancer than those who either have no children or do not breastfeed their newborns.
Women with breast cancer can choose between 2-type of surgery. Mastectomy is surgery to remove the breast completely. Breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) removes the cancer and part of healthy tissue around it. If some cancer cells are left behind after surgery they are then killed by radiation treatment.
To reduce breast cancer risk, one must do screening mammography after crossing age of 40-yr . Monthly self-breast examination and regular clinical breast examination by any health care provider should be done. If any lump is detected it is important to get it checked
Lifestyle modification are required which will further reduce risk of breast cancer.
