A Simple Fitness Routine turned into a Passion for Boxing: Gold Medallist Gurseerat Kaur

“My journey started with a desire to lose weight, and I never imagined it would lead me to this point. What began as a fitness routine soon turned into a passion”, said 14-year old Gurseerat Kaur, a student of Mount Carmel School, Sector 47 here who won the gold medal at the Asian School Boxing Championship at Abu Dhabi (UAE) held from August 28 to September 10.

Before winning gold at Abu Dhabi the fourteen year old had won a Gold Medal and secured the first position in the ASBC Asian Junior & Schoolboys & Schoolgirls Boxing Championship trials held in Rohtak, Haryana, from August 8-11.

Her father Kanwal Deep Singh is working as Chief Security Officer (CSO) at Fortis Hospital, Mohali and Mother – Navpreet Kaur is working as teacher.

“Winning the Gold Medal at the Asian Games has been a defining moment in my life. It symbolizes the years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance I’ve put into boxing. My coaches have been instrumental in shaping me as a boxer, pushing me to improve and hone my skills. Managing both my studies and boxing hasn’t been easy, but with proper planning and time management, I’ve been able to stay focused on both fronts. Looking ahead, my goal is to keep improving and represent India on even bigger platforms. I want to continue making my family and my country proud, while also excelling academically”, said Gurseerat.

Her mother, Navreet Kaur while elaborating her previous achievements said, Gurseerat Kaur has distinguished herself as a prominent figure in boxing through a series of notable achievements. She earned the title of the best boxer in the Union Territory (UT), showcasing her exceptional skills and dedication to the sport. Her prowess was further demonstrated when she secured a gold medal at a competitive event in Noida, underscoring her dominance in the ring. Additionally, Kaur achieved first place in the trials held in Rohtak, a testament to her superior technique and preparation. Her remarkable performance culminated in winning a gold medal at the Asian School Boxing Championships (ASBC), marking her as a formidable competitor on an international stage. These accomplishments collectively highlight her exceptional talent and commitment to boxing.”

School Principal Dr. Parveena John Singh, of Mount Carmel School, Chandigarh, said, ‘Gurseerat has set an inspiring example of balancing academics and sports. From the beginning, she has shown unwavering focus and determination in both areas, consistently motivated by her alma mater and parents to reach her goals. Among her many accomplishments, winning the Gold Medal at the Asian Games stands out as a moment of immense pride for the entire nation. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Gurseerat and her parents on this well-deserved achievement.”

Gurseerat’s coach Dr. Bhagwant Singh said, “It is indeed praiseworthy to see a 14-year-old who has worked with dedication, which makes here not just a boxer but a warrior. She has worked hard to achieve this and it has paid off. Her grit and determination makes me proud to be her coach and I am amazed by her resilience and skill and she’s someone who has got the heart of a lion and the will of a champion.”
