“If a person is having aching and heavy legs, ankle swelling, dilated bluish bulge under the skin, redness, dryness and itchiness, then he or she is likely to be suffering from varicose veins.
However, if the disease is not properly evaluated and is operated by an inexperienced surgeon, chances of reoccurrence of the disease become higher”, said Dr Ravul Jindal, Director, Vascular Surgery, Fortis Hospital Mohali.
However in some cases, the skin above the ankle can shrink while irregular scar-like patches can also appear at the ankles.
Also, patients can have chronic non-healing ulcers if the conditions are severe.
Varicose veins are swollen and painful veins caused by damaged valves that allow blood to travel in the wrong direction.
These enlarged veins are blue or purple in colour and should be treated on a priority basis to avoid further complications such as formation of painful ulcers.
On causes that led to the occurrence of the disease, Dr Jindal, who is also the President of the Venous Association of India, said, “The exact reason for the cause of varicose veins is not known.
However, it is common in patients who are tall, stand continually over a prolonged period and those who’re post-pregnancy.
Sometimes, the disease runs in families and is genetic.
Recently, the team of doctors led by Dr Ravul Jindal, treated a 57-year-old Amritsar-based patient, N Gupta, who was in acute pain and discomfort owing to varicose veins in her right leg.
“Upon examination, the patient’s right leg had swelling with dilated bluish bulge under the skin, redness, dryness, and the skin on her leg had also started darkening.
An ultrasound scan revealed impaired valves in the leg. However, we carried out laser treatment of the diseased vein with Foam Sclerotherapy of varicosities”, said Dr Jindal, adding that due to effective treatment, the patient was discharged on the same day of the procedure and was able to walk with ease.
The patient has fully recovered and leading a normal life today.
Dr Jindal, further said, “The modern treatment, which is available at Fortis Hospital, is less painful and ensures early recovery.

The procedure takes about 30 minutes and within one hour, the patient can go home.
Also, the patient is on fewer medications and post-procedure care.”
