CPR a life saver in case of cardiac emergency
CPR a life saver in case of cardiac emergency: A new lease of life can be given to several cardiac patients, who are in the final stages of life and on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), due to heart attack.
The team of doctors headed by Dr RK Jaswal, Head of Department and Director of Cardiology; and Director, Cathlab, Fortis Hospital Mohali, successfully performed complex coronary intervention on several such patients on ongoing basic life-saving technique of CPR. Fortis Hospital Mohali is the only hospital in North India which has been certified as the Centre of Excellence of Rotablation. Dr Jaswal has been assigned as the Proctor of Rotational Atherectomy procedures.
Dr RK Jaswal, HOD and Director of Cardiology; and Director, Cathlab, Fortis Hospital Mohali, said, “CPR is a life-saving technique carried out in emergency situations when a patient’s breathing or heart stops. Several patients have been revived.”
Dr RK Jaswal gave a detailed insight how successful performance of complex angioplasty in three such patients with ongoing CPR saved their life. Majority of these patients required either Rotational Atherectomy (Rotablation) or Bifurcation Stenting or both. The role of a cardiac anaesthetist and the rescue team is paramount in dealing with such high-risk cardiac patients who are already undergoing CPR. Majority of these patients were accepted for laptop and poster presentation at the top-most world cardiology conferences.
The patient, aged 75, had a bypass surgery and breast cancer about 20 years ago. The patient presented with a heart attack due to blockage of major bypass graft. In an attempt to open the graft, the calcified vessel developed a crack and the patient collapsed. The rescue team started the resuscitation measures and Dr Jaswal used his experience to do Rotablation of the calcified artery and quickly deployed two stents. The moment the blood flow was restored, the patient started stabilizing and did not need CPR. She was discharged the next day.

Due to his expertise in Rotational Atherectomy, Dr Jaswal was able to save the life of the patient. There was no other way that this calcified artery could have been opened under such emergency circumstances.
Another patient, aged 64, was also brought back from the jaws of death under similar circumstances.
A patient, aged 80, had also presented with a heart attack. Coronary dissection led to a cardiac arrest. Immediate effective CPR by the rescue team along with a cardiac anaesthetist maintained the blood circulation of the body during the time Dr Jaswal conducted Rotablation and Bifurcation Stenting to save his life. The patient recently celebrated his fourth ‘Re-Birthday’ in the presence of Dr Jaswal.

Meanwhile, to commemorate World Heart Day, a Walkathon was organized at Fortis Hospital Mohali. Nearly 30 cardiac patients treated for various cardiac-related complications by Dr Jaswal participated in the event and were felicitated on the occasion. The group was led by five survivors of cardiac arrest by effective stenting done by Dr R.K. Jaswal.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jaswal, said, “World Heart Day is celebrated to spread awareness about cardiovascular disease. The aim is to educate people how a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, balanced diet, meditation and yoga, plays a paramount role in protecting onself from cardiac-related complications.”
