School Swachhata Ambassadors Programme

Today, a unique School Swachhta Ambassador programme was launched from thirty eight prominent Schools of the city, by Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration in collaboration with NGO-Yuvsatta and Eco Club of St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School, Sector 44D at their School campus. In which around 100 students and teachers participated and from each participating School one teacher and two students were designated as School Swachhta Ambassadors. And all of them were welcomed with pictures of their green pledge.

 

Dr. Abdul Qayum, Dy. Conservator of Forests cum Addl. CEO, CREST, Chandigarh Administration was the Chief Guest on the occasion. And prominent amongst those who addressed the gathering included Mr. Pramod Sharma, Coordinator, Yuvsatta, Monica Chawla, Principal and Ms. Ishita, Programme Officer of Swacch Bharat Abhiyan at Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.

Addressing the gathering Dr. Abdul Qayum quoting Mahatma Gandhi said that ‘He made cleanliness and sanitation an integral part of the Gandhian way of living. His mission was total sanitation for all. And in keeping with this spirit ‘Swachh Bharat: Swachh Vidyalaya’ is the national campaign driving ‘Clean India: Clean Schools’. A key feature of the campaign is to ensure that every school in India has a set of functioning and well maintained water, sanitation and hygiene facilities. And he expects the newly appointed ‘School Swachhta Ambassadors’ to work for realizing these objectives plus inculcate and imbibe the green living habits among young minds-the generation next.

Ms. Ishita shared various ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’ initiatives of Municipal Corporation in which Schools can contribute and participate focusing on the self-pledge that ‘My Waste is My Responsibility’. She also motivated students to participate in a ‘Swacch Sarthi Fellowship’ of Government of India, inviting applications from young innovators before March 19, 2021, on sustainable solutions in waste management!

Mrs. Monica Chawla, Principal chaired a participatory group activity in which the participants prepared a year-long planner of Eco-club activities, they’ll undertake in academic year 2021-22 in their respective Schools. She also added that this workshop will be another effort to enlighten the school children, regarding hygiene and keeping the environment around them clean.

Mr. Pramod Sharma said that despite high level of awareness of environmental issues and its impacts people are often hesitant to take action to change their behavior and School Swachhta Ambassadors through Eco Clubs in Schools should harbinger motivate individual behavior changes in personal consumption of energy, food, and transportation-the major reasons of looming climate change crisis.

In the concluding session the participating teachers pledged to make their Eco Clubs more active and vibrant. And in the end Swachhta Ambassador Badges, certificates, complimentary sanitizers and masks were presented to all.
