Department of English, G.G.D.S.D. College Kheri Gurna, Banur, organized a Two Day Online workshop on “Words Matter: Smart Steps to Build an Effective Vocabulary” on 21st and 22nd July, 2020. The topic was chosen keeping in mind the incumbent necessity to have a strong hold over vocabulary so as to gain command over English Language. The workshop was inaugurated by worthy Maj Gen A.K. Shori, Chairman, Managing Committee of the college. Respected Dr. Sunil K. Baria, Principal of the college delivered the welcome address.
The first session on Day one was taken up by Prof. Ashima Dhir, (Retd.) Associate Professor, G.G.D.S.D. College, Chandigarh. She talked extensively about the various steps to enhance one’s vocabulary like Mnemonics, Word Mapping and Contextual reading. Dr. Raj Gaurav Verma, Assistant Professor, Dept. of English and Modern European Languages, University of Lucknow, was the second speaker of the first day. He stated in his lecture that knowledge is interconnected and Jargons from different subjects can help enrich a person’s vocabulary. The participants were also apprised about various games that can help in learning new words like Detective Diction, Word Building, Charades and Newspaper Builder.
The first speaker of the second day was Dr. Neena Gupta, Assistant Professor, Dept. of English, Central University of Jammu. In her session, she talked about word etymology, their roots and origin and stated that we need to think about developing empathetic vocabulary. The second speaker of the day was Ms. Chitrakshi Vij, Communication and Behavioral Trainer from New Delhi. She gave tips to the participants to build vocabulary through active listening skills like following the web series, podcasts and audio books which serve a dual purpose of adding words to one’s knowledge along with improving their pronunciation. The sessions were followed by an interactive session, which provided the platform to the participants to clear their doubts. The workshop got an incredible feedback from the participants who found it extremely informative and engaging.

Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Meenakshi Negi, Head, P.G. Dept. of Commerce and Management. More than 180 participants all across the country attended and were benefitted from the Workshop. The entire proceeding of the workshop was conducted by Dr. Ankita Gupta, Head, Department of English.
