COVID 19 unsung warriors—Chandigarh NSS volunteers
A hero does not have to wear a cap or ride on a stallion. The people
who inspire us can come from so many different walks of life. COVID 19 has brought
forth many hidden heroes from different walks of life. Some wages war in pandemic
battlefield, some continue their fight while at home in one way or the other. There is
a force of NSS volunteers in Chandigarh that has been working tirelessly for poor
away from media attention since day one COVID 19.
While talking to Mr Bikram Rana, State Liaison Officer, Chandigarh NSS Cell,
who himself in the forefront to monitor all the activities of NSS volunteers during
pandemic said that keeping the enormity of pandemic, he deputed 85 NSS
programme officers along with 44 officials have been deployed in the field in
services of needy, poor and down trodden section of society. From distribution of
medicines, ration and packets of cooked food in colonies and slum areas to be active
on social media NSS volunteers were there busy silently to complete the assigned
work. “We facilitate the distribution of cooked food as well as ration at each and
every areas of colonies and slums,” said he.
He further revealed that over 34,000 videos of face mask making have
been shared with members, various groups, youths and villagers and up to May 3
7,950 people have started mask making work. They have stitched over one lakh face
masks and distributed among the poor free of cost.
Besides, 32,349 volunteers have got register themselves with iGOT
portal of Government of India for MoYA training. He also stated that he has to send
report to government of India on daily basis regarding activities taken up by the NSS
volunteers in fight against the pandemic.
The activities carried out by the Chandigarh NSS volunteers include face
mask making; cooked food and ration distribution; sanitization of hot spots and
spread of awareness among the public about social distancing and steps to be taken
for prevention of pandemic spread.
“NSS volunteers have also handle people at 37 important places such
as banks, hospitals and public service places. Besides, 30 old people have been taken
care,” told Mr Rana.
Mr Rana also admitted that COVID 19 has given the NSS Cell nearly
double strength to work, a sense of discipline and enjoyment of selfless service
towards poor and needy.

Mahatma Gandhi offered us a ‘Talisman’ to keep him in
moment of doubt and confusion. It is this ‘Talisman’ that we need to hold up to
public policy in the glittering world of vast reservoirs of darkness, he said. Sense of
confidence is visible on his face when he moves on to another assignment.
